Home Accessibility Modification for Seniors
Home accessibility modification looks at the whole home as a route — entrance, main corridors, doors, switches, flooring and lighting — and removes the steps, lips and reaches that quietly limit an older person's independence.
Points we usually look at
- Main entrance — kerbs, door thresholds, lever handles and a sheltered approach with somewhere to rest a walking aid.
- Doorways — clear opening width, door swing and the option of a sliding or barn-style door where space is tight.
- Floors — replacing or coating shiny, slippery finishes; eliminating small kerbs between rooms.
- Switches and sockets — heights that suit a seated or stooped reach, contrasting plates so they show against the wall.
- Lighting — brighter, even lighting in corridors and stairs; motion-activated night lights between bedroom and bathroom.
- Lever taps and handles — replacing knobs and round handles with levers that work with weaker grip.
- Storage at reach height — relocating daily items so the user doesn't need to bend or stretch on a stool.
HDB and condo realities
Many Singapore homes have hard limits — column walls, plumbing risers, parquet condition or owner-corporation rules. We work within those constraints and tell you which modifications are quick wins, which need a longer renovation window, and which are not practical without altering the unit structure.
